I love the idea of Tree Stencils. I've take a few of these but now having a name for them makes them pop out to me more and will help me remember to look for them, etc. I will retack with mine and with another similar series I took.
Thanks so much for joining the conversation Josh! Really love your contribution as well from your Seeing Light series - once you start noticing, it becomes a little obsessive. My hope with this post was that our Notes feed would be flooded with other tree stencils, in part because I want to see more than what I'm noticing in my neighborhood! Thanks for sharing what you've seen.
Hi Xavi, thanks for your comment! I just went down the rabbit hole looking at Manuel Alvarez Bravo's photography - a very enjoyable way to spend some of my Saturday morning.
I love that shot on your website with the tree stencil against the yellow rectangles. Seeing design purposefully made with the intention of interacting with a tree's shadow is very satisfying.
I totally agree, I love how urban spaces and nature interact together. They makr the world a more enjoyable and photographable place. Thanks for checking out.my website! 🙌
Wow thanks for sharing this. That house is incredible - so the tree in the shadow is the very same tree the house was built around? Luis Barragan is my kind of architect!
That's right, the story goes that Barragan was already retired, he accepted to see the land where the house was planned for knowing he would reject the project until he saw that tree and visualised how the house should be built around it.

This is so cool, we share a common interest in photographing our shadow and those casted by trees.
The great Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo called them made-up landscapes.

Before I forget, the picture you mentioned is from Casa Gilardi in Mexico City, Luis Barragan was the architect. I did a small write-up/photo essay at the beginning of last year: https://open.substack.com/pub/xavibuendia/p/elevating-the-spirit?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=1ivi2z
