Eighteen Shared Double Exposures
Peruse the complete collaboration, plus Art Drop #6 ends tomorrow!
THE COMPLETE SHOOT
Each photograph preserves a small fraction of time – maybe it is 1/125th of a second, maybe it is 1/500th of a second, just that brief moment when the shutter is commanded to open by the photographer who controls it.
But when two photographers control that same shutter and each gets a say on what the camera sees, well, anything can happen. Maybe it’s a visual tug-of-war, maybe it is a harmonious coming together of divergent viewpoints, maybe the final product sings, maybe it flops, but whatever it is, it is something fresh, something challenging and something that should see the light of day rather than relegation to a hard drive.
Last week we got into the details of how we made eighteen double exposures together over the course of two hours, sharing a camera and an umbrella at Skylands in north New Jersey. Now let’s get into the photographs presented chronologically like a contact sheet, from the first tentative shot to the last, as we figured this project out along the way.
So that’s the collaboration in its entirety…
The first photograph of each double exposure was comparatively easy because there was beauty and subjects of interest all around us. As the first photographer we had a choice to make – provide a considerate base layer for the second photographer to work with, or just take a shot that could stand on its own and give the second photographer a bit more work to do. That second photograph was usually the hardest. It needed to do justice to the first, and not just be a double exposure for double exposure’s sake.
All in all it was a successful outing and a way of shooting that we’d like to return to and refine in the future.
ART DROP #6 CLOSES TOMORROW
The 16th double exposure from this shoot is of course this month’s art drop – prints, both framed and unframed, of Layering for Fall are only available through tomorrow November 7.
COMING SOON…
We hope you enjoyed seeing the full collection of double exposures. It is fulfilling to have an outlet where we can show them all together. Thanks for taking a look!
Until next time,
Interesting double-act challenge!
